Robert L. Monks is a senior associate who practices primarily in the areas of appellate litigation, commercial litigation and transactions, gambling law, personal injury, estate planning and administration, insurance coverage litigation, and general civil litigation.
Mr. Monks received his Juris Doctor degree in 1988 from Michigan State University – Detroit College of Law, where he received a Certificate of Academic Excellence for the 1987-1988 academic year. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1985.
Prior to joining the firm in May 2001, Mr. Monks served as a law clerk to the Honorable John G. Brosky, Senior Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. He also practiced as an associate for more than ten years with another local law firm.
Mr. Monks has developed an expertise in facilitating the purchase and sale of various unique deferred financial assets and, in particular, structured settlement payment streams. Mr. Monks currently represents a leading national specialty finance company, and is responsible for pioneering the procedure for obtaining required court approval of structured settlement transfers, in compliance with recently enacted structured settlement transfer statutes in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Mr. Monks has successfully obtained court approval for the transfer of several million dollars in deferred assets in over two dozen counties spanning across Pennsylvania.
Mr. Monks is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court of Ohio and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and an appointed member of the North Fayette Township Parks and Recreation Board.
