John F. Doherty is of counsel to the firm and manages an
active trial practice in the areas of tort and insurance
litigation, including personal injury, professional negligence,
product liability, commercial litigation, automobile lemon law,
issues concerning zoning and land use, and criminal defense.
Mr. Doherty graduated from Duquesne University where he received his Bachelor of Arts in May, 1986. He attended the Duquesne University School of Law, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he earned his Juris Doctor in June, 1989.
Following graduation, Mr. Doherty clerked for the Honorable Paul R. Zavarella, President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County and then for the Honorable Nicholas P. Papadakos, Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. While clerking for Justice Papadakos, Mr. Doherty drafted nine Court Opinions, six of which became the Majority Opinions. His responsibilities also included the review of Allocatur Petitions, direct appeals and attorney disciplinary matters.
Before joining the firm in December, 2002, Mr. Doherty was engaged in a very active trial practice. His experience includes both the defense and prosecution of a wide range of litigated areas.
He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
In addition, Mr. Doherty has lectured at the Pennsylvania State University College of Business and Administration in McKeesport, Pennsylvania in the area of United States Constitutional law.
He is the Legal Counsel to the Italian Consulate, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was appointed to the City of Pittsburgh Planning Commission, where he has served since 1993, and was retained as a Legal Advisor for Ralph Edwards/Stu Billett Productions for its Pittsburgh taping of The People's Court.
He is an active member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, as a member of its House of Delegates, and participates on various committees of the Allegheny County Bar Association. He has also completed a term as a Barrister in the American Inns of Court, Pittsburgh Chapter.
Mr. Doherty has served as a member of the Bishop Canevin High School Advisory Board since 1997, and was appointed as a member of the Duquesne University Greek Life Task Force in 1991.
